Reading rooms

Opening of the new building of Gazi Husrev-bey Library in January of 2014 enabled a significant improvement and modernization of space for storage of valuable manuscripts and printed materials that serve as a unique source for studying of the history of Islamic tradition and cultural past of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Equal improvement has been made to the conditions in which students, researchers or scientists may conduct their studies and scientific researches. In an attempt to satisfy specific needs of two groups of readers according to their interests, the Library offers two reading rooms: one for students and one for researchers. The purpose of the student reading room is primarily to enable optimum conditions for studying while the research reading room is adjusted to researchers who use digital materials of the Library. Both reading rooms are under video surveillance.

Student reading room

Since a large number of students of the University of Sarajevo live in dormitories that frequently lack proper rooms for studying, Gazi Husrev-bey Library is a place where exactly those conditions of quiet and peace can be found.

The large reading room contains 100 seats of which each has an electrical outlet for connection of a laptop or tablet. Another advantage of this reading room is that it is air-conditioned and covered by free wireless internet signal.

Students may bring their own books and materials from which they can learn but, at the same time, they may use the Library funds if necessary. The Library cafeteria is also available for rest and refreshments.

Research reading room

The Gazi Husrev-bey Library keeps centuries-old, valuable, and rare archive and manuscript materials which have, for conservational reasons, been digitalized and are delivered to readers in digital form. In exceptional cases, a written request for examination of original documents must be sent to the Director of the Library.

The capacity of this reading room is 20 seats. It is equipped with computers the purpose of which is to provide indirect access to documents in a way which, without digitization, would not be possible.

For security reasons, access to internet, usage of USB and similar appliances cannot be made on computers in the research reading room.
